The island of Sao Tome is approximately
48km long and 27km wide, with rich flora and fauna, and stunning beaches.
The population is estimated at 93,000 of which 30,000 live in Sao
Tome City.
The capital, Sao Tome City, is a historical, laid back town, with
pastel painted colonial houses, pretty churches and a lively market
area. The legacy of post-colonial hard times is visible everywhere
with cracked pavements and old buildings such as the cathedral, presidential
palace and the fisherman’s church. The National museum in the
old Fort Sao Sebastiao is also well worth a visit.
There is very little shopping to be done in the city, but you will
find souvenirs like CD’s of local bands, paintings and the
odd t-shirt for sale in the bigger hotels and in the streets. Down
on the town beach you can watch the fishermen bringing in the catch
of the day – red snapper, wahoo and marlin fish.
In order to experience the culture of the island you need to leave
civilisation behind and head inland. There is a surfaced road running
from Sao Tome City to Porto Allegre in the South – the rest
are just dirt tracks only passable in a 4x4.
Porto Alegre, the southern most inhabited village, is a sleepy fishing
village, from here you can take a 20 minute boat trip to Ilheu das
Rolas. The village of Santana on the East Coast has a beautiful church
and fantastic views of Santana Island. You can also take a boat from
Sao Tome City to the island of Cobras, which gives good views of the
city over the water.
The North Coast has some of the best beaches on the island with the
driest part of the island to the North of the village of Santa Catarina.
ECOFAC have a project on Praia Micolo and monitor the turtles coming
to lay their eggs. You will see sticks in the sand were the eggs have
been laid. Lagoa Azul is a sheltered rocky beach and is perfect for
snorkelling with some very rare reefs to explore.
As you drive inland from the city you will drive through the forests
and into the Obo National Park. Trekkers can climb the Pico de Sao
Tome in 2 days but you need to be physically fit as the trek is
demanding, the highest point is 2024m.
A visit to the village of Bom Succeso is worth a visit and from
here a short walk will take you to the beautiful Sao Nicolau waterfall.
Those interested in flora and fauna, fine beaches and lots of history
will find Sao Tome an interesting and exciting destination.
