Fauna And Flora Wildlife
The forests of Sao Tome and Principe were classified as the second most important in terms of biological interest of the 72 forests of Africa in 1988. Trekking can be organised and in combination with staying overnight at the old plantations (rocas). The islands are perfect for bird watchers. The best time to travel is December-January as this is the mating season. Additionally turtles come up to the beaches and lay eggs in Mid-November and early February and Killer Wales and Dolphins can be seen off the North East Coast.
Hiking Sailing
The Obo National Park on Sao Tome is 30 minutes from the city and is excellent for hikers. You can pick up guides from Bom Successo on the way if you haven’t already organised one. The lightest rainforest trek is the round trip to Lagoa Amelia, which takes about 4-5 hours. Sailing around the islands is a good way to view the beaches and greenery of the islands, which are inaccessible by vehicle and sometime foot. Another trip is to follow the Whale Trail in order to see the hump back Whales and dolphins.
